The Porsche company as we know it today dates back to 1930 when Ferdinand Porsche established an engineering consultancy in Stuggart. Porsche was hired by the German government to design a car for the people - a Volkswagen. It was known as the 64, but we know it as the Beetle. The war put its production on hold. Ferdinand Porsche was arrested at the end of the war on suspicion of war crimes and held for 20 months, he was never tried.
Whilst he was being held his son Ferry created a one-off car called the Gmund Roadster. It generated a lot of interest and before it was put into production space was provided for two small seats and was designated the 356. The 356 evolved through three major updates and sold 77,000 worldwide by the time it was discontinued in 1964.
In 1964 launched the 911, which had Porsche's first internally developed engine. Originally designated the 901, Peugeot had already secured the rights to the 901 name, along with every other three digit number with a zero in the middle, for the potentially lucrative French market. The 911 today remains the backbone of the brand.
The fastest Porsche ever was the 917/30 TC built for the Can-An series. With a 5.4 liter turbocharged engine that produced over 1000 hp it hit a top speed of 257 mph and could hit 60 from a standing start in 2.1 seconds.
