2CV

The Citroen 2CV was produced between 1948 and 1990. The brief was to produce a car for the French rural population. A low-priced, rugged "umbrella on four wheels" that would enable four peasants to drive 50 kg (110 lb) of farm goods to market at 50 km/h (31 mph), in clogs and across muddy unpaved roads if necessary. The car would use no more than 3 L of gasoline to travel 100 km (78 mpg). Most famously, it would be able to drive across a ploughed field without breaking the eggs it was carrying.

Although designed before the war Citro創 launched the car at the Paris Salon in 1948. It was a great success from day one and there was soon a three year waiting list. Throughout this period Citroen didn't need to market the car but gradually the competition built up.

In 1960 the 2CV was updated, the most obvious outward sign was the replacement of the corrugated bonnet. Soon a 602 cc engine was offered, although the smaller 425 cc engine was still be available in France and some export market.
